Stress can make it difficult to unwind, focus, and sleep. Yoga helps you to live in the present by connecting you more deeply to your sense of purpose and awareness. This week we’ll explore ways yoga encourages mental and physical relaxation.
Breathing
The breathing exercises practiced during yoga can help lower your heart rate and shift your nervous system into a more relaxed state. Yoga teaches that controlling your breathing can help you control your body and quiet your mind.
Meditation
Meditation may help you learn to be more mindful and aware of the present moment without judgment. Yoga encourages mindfulness which helps you to limit thinking about the past or worrying about the future.
Sleep
Yoga can help improve the quality and quantity of sleep. Results from a study in the Journal of Ayurveda & Integrative Medicine indicates that older adults practicing Yoga regularly had better overall sleep quality, less episodes of disturbed sleep, took less time to fall asleep, had less daytime dysfunction, had less use of sleep medications and felt more rested and energetic in the morning.
These are only a few of the ways that yoga helps to relieve stress. No experience is needed to start, so grab a mat and get started. View our class schedule for a variety of yoga options with our certified instructors.
